Quartz Crystal
Quartz crystal -- silicon dioxide (SIO2) -- is an abundant mineral and readily available from most rock to 'new age' shops. To the Cherokees this stone was sacred and was called 'ulvsadv' (shone through it), and our stories tell of how it was extracted from the head of the serpent Uktena. A natural quartz point is always six sided and the point will always be six sided. In its natural clear-tipped form it is capable of much creativity by anyone who is willing to work with it. It is the shape and the markings of the natural quartz points through which we are going to journey in this article. When discussing the facets of the point, it will always be referring to the facet that 'feels' the natural front of the stone. Should your crystal have the marking being discussed but not on the natural front of the stone then it will only carry some of the traits of this marking. The full strength will be when the shape is symmetrical, and at the natural front of the crystal.
Some crystals have natural triangles as their front facet. Triangles are on of the perfect geometric shapes, having equal sides and angles. The number three represents the power of speech, manifestation, creation and intelligence. There are three worlds, three dimensions of space, three stages of time, three states of matter, and three kingdoms of nature. This particular stone is recognized as it is flanked either side by symmetrical shapes of either five or seven sides. Both the 7-3-7 combinations and the 5-3-5 combinations add up to prime numbers, and are thus mathematically complete. These crystals are useful for projecting thought into a manifestation. We create what we think. Use them while projecting a clear question, and a clear answer will return.
Some quartz points have a natural five-sided front facet. I like to call them 'Mother Stones'. The number five relates to areas of health, thought, and versatility. There are five senses, our limbs have five digits, and if we count the projections of the body from the torso there are five extremities; head, arms, and legs. This shape is recognizable as a base line from which two smaller lines reach upwards and outwards.
These short lines soon turn in on themselves, forming two longer lines that reach up to a point. The more perfectly symmetrical the shape, the more balanced the energies. These crystals are filled with emotion and are useful in self exploration and self healing. Gazing into the face of the crystal during meditation can unlock the emotions and help to develop gentleness and compassion. This shape transcends ego and reflects the spirit. I have more than one Mother Stone in my collection, different stones representing different aspects of divine feminine energy. One is mounted atop my Lunar staff, and brings to me the energies of Grandmother Moon. Another one seems to link into the stories of Ishtar. I use yet another for scrying. Mother Stones soothe my spirit, and are amongst my favorite crystals.
Other quartz points have a natural seven-sided front facet. The number seven is the number of the mystic, as in 'seventh son of seventh son'. Seven represents the seeker of the truth and higher wisdom. Seven is the highest primary number that is prime, and is an omen of good fortune. There are seven virtues, and seven days. In Cherokee traditions there are seven directions, seven sacred days, and seven clans of our people. This particular stone is recognizable for as well as the seven-sided front facet the opposite side will be a triangle. This balances the energies of the seven-sided front, and allows them to be made manifest. These stones teach us to unlock the wisdom within ourselves. Large stones can be mounted on a plate or other such form and used specifically for retrieving information.

The four-sided patterns do not fall on the actual point of the crystal, but rather in the area where the body turns to make the point. Four is the number that represents the truth. There are four physical elements, four seasons, four compass directions, four winds of the medicine wheel. Four is solid, and builds character, so it is only appropriate that four should mirror our character in these crystals. It is also interesting to note that there are four distinct shapes of the type of four sided facets. These shapes are recognizable as parallelograms on the side of the stone where the body joins onto the point, and are portals that link us to different times. They can be any size, but will always spiral clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on how the atoms of the crystal bonded as it grew and formed. The parallelograms going from the base up to the left take us back in time, and the ones going from the base up to the right take us forward to the future. Perhaps you need to go somewhere in your past to right a wrong or heal a wound. Perhaps you need to go to your future to sow some seeds. It is possible for a stone to have more than one of these portals on it. Indeed some crystals have both and can be used for either purpose. Some of these parallelograms are perfect diamonds and these enable you to delve deeper into the here and now. Sometimes these shapes will appear as perfect diamonds and not on the angles of the point but actually on a face, nearly forming a seventh facet on the point of the stone. These are very rare crystals indeed. This diamond is usually clear, allowing you to enter the stone and explore its inner realms. Whatever you find in one of these portals, whether you like it or not, it is an aspect of yourself, for these stones are mirrors of the truth.
Sometimes amidst the vast galaxies and markings that are suspended in the body of a quartz crystal a prismatic inclusion can be found. When the light catches this mark the crystal is filled with a rainbow. These have been caused by some damage or trauma in the evolution of the stone and remind us that to find the rainbow in our lives we have to endure a little rain now and again. As unique beings, we are privileged to express our own dance of light in our own way. Rainbows build bridges between heaven and earth, man and the gods, light and darkness. Rainbow crystals do likewise. Other times when we gaze into the body of the crystal smaller three dimensional inclusions can be found. These 'crystals within crystals' are called phantoms, and are indicative of the crystal's growth, similar to the rings of a tree. The phantoms record specific periods in the life of that crystal. Used properly, they can help to unlock the doors to higher realms of being. Phantom crystals make excellent teachers.
Another marking that indicates a crystal is holding information is a natural small pyramid type marking actually etched on one [or more] of the facets of the points. In order to find these markings the crystal will need to be carefully examined in bright light. The Mother Stone atop my Lunar staff has such a marking. After I had mounted the stone and finished constructing the staff, I examined the stone again and found that the original pyramid marking had been joined by two more! It would seem these markings appear when the stone has found the appropriate person or place to release its information. Other markings in the body of the crystal may resemble mystic figures. These will be found by close examination of the markings and inclusions in the stone. I have two such crystals and in my opinion they are amongst the most atmospheric I have encountered. It seems the purpose of these stones is specifically to enhance their owner's own personal growth. The crystals will attract to them the people with whom they can best communicate.
There are worlds if information from these beings of stone just waiting for us. I am sure I have only just touched the tip of the iceberg, just as I am sure that as you work with your quartz points you will find yourself on a remarkable journey of discovery and light. Travel with an open heart and a quiet mind, and remember in all things to give thanks. We have been given wondrous, truly wondrous things.
